Easter Island: Geography and Map

The islands, area

Easter Island: Geography and Map

Rapa Nui

The main island of Rapa Nui is preceded by the following small uninhabited islands:

  • Motu Nui - located in the southwest
  • Motu Kao Kao - Located in the southwest
  • Motu Iti - located in the southwest
  • Motu Tautara - located in the west
  • Motu Marotiri - located in the east of the Poike peninsula

The Easter Islands have a coast to the Pacific with a length of around 60 km.

Tidal range

On the coast of Easter Island, the mean tidal range is around 2-3 m.

The world's highest tidal range can be found in the Bay of Fundy in Canada, where it is up to 16 meters, and at spring tide even over 20 meters. The Bay of Fundy is located on the Atlantic between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, which is called Nova Scotia in German and whose capital is Halifax.

On the German North Sea coast it varies between one and three meters. In the western Baltic Sea, on the other hand, the tidal range is only 0.3 meters, while it is barely noticeable in the eastern Baltic Sea.

Longitude and latitude

The main island of the Easter Islands lies roughly on the following mean geographical latitude (abbreviation Δφ) and mean geographical longitude (abbreviation Δλ):

Δφ = 27 south latitude

Δλ = 109 west longitude

You can find detailed information on this subject under: Geographical longitude and latitude.

Legal time

On the Easter Islands, the following value applies to Central European Time (CET), i.e. the time without summer time. A minus sign means that it is earlier there, a plus sign that it is later than CET:

Δt (CET) = - 7 h

More detailed explanations of the time can be found under: Time zones, time.

The highest point of the sun on Easter Island

Easter Island is located at a southern latitude of around 27 .

If the sun, or its image point, is at the southern tropic, i.e. at δ = 23.5 , summer begins on Easter Island, this is December 21. Then, for the highest position of the sun at noon, according to Eq. 1 (see position of the sun):

27 = (90 - h) + 23.5

H = 86.5

At 86.5 , the sun on Easter Island is the highest level of the entire year above the horizon (more precisely: above the horizon).

Maunga Terevaka

The highest mountain in the archipelago is Maunga Terevaka, with a height of 507 m.

Other high mountains:

  • Puakuteke, with a height of 370 m
  • Cerra Puli, with a height of 302 m

rivers and lakes

There are no rivers on the islands. But there are numerous smaller crater lakes.

The Pacific

With a total coastline of 60 km, Easter Island borders the Pacific Ocean - to be more precise, Easter Island is located in the southern Pacific about 3,500 km west of Chile.
